Kirstie Louise Alley, born January 12th, 1951 in Wichita, Kansas under the name Alley joined the cast of Cheers in its 6th season in 1987. Before that though, her on-screen debut was 1982 when she stared as Vulcan Starfleet officer Lieutenant Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Kirstie remained a series regular until Cheers’ 11th and final season where she left alongside many other original characters in 1993.
She was nominated for five Emmys in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Cheers and won once in 1991. While on Cheers, Alley also starred in 1989’s Look Who’s Talking with John Travolta. The movie grossed more than $295 million across the world and led to two sequels: Look Who’s Talking Too and Look Who’s Talking Now.
In 2016, Alley gave an interview to StarTrek.com in which she discussed her career and the roles of which she was proudest. “I would have my grandchildren watch Cheers first,” she said. “I was very proud of David’s Mother, just because it was a drama and I hadn’t done something like that before.”

Alley’s sons, William and Lillie, announced their mother’s death on Instagram with a statement that read: “To all our friends, far and wide around the world…We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered.” Alley was 71 years old when she passed.
“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, giving us certainty that she would never give up on life or the adventures ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”
The statement continued, “We are grateful to the incredible team of doctors and nurses at the Moffitt Cancer Center for their care. Our mother was passionate about life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals. She always tried to live life to the fullest and inspire others to do the same. We thank you for your love and prayers and ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.”
After the news of her death, Alley’s friend and Look Who’s Talking co-star, John Travolta, paid tribute to her with an Instagram post. “Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie.I know we will see each other again,” he wrote. Ted Danson, Alley’s Cheers co-star also honored her memory with a statement to E! News.
Kirstie Alley’s representative confirmed to People that the actress died of colon cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, both men and women have a 4 percent chance (or 1 in 25) of developing colorectal cancer at some point during their lifetime.
The organization estimates that there will be 106,180 new cases of colon cancer and 44,850 new cases of rectal cancer in the year 2022. Furthermore, the American Cancer Society reports that colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of death related tocancer in men and women in Americaand is actually the second most common cause of death due to cancer when men and women are considered together.
About 52,580 deaths are expected to result from colorectal cancer in 2022, according to the organization’s estimates. Other celebrities who have succumbed to colon cancer include Audrey Hepburn, Chadwick Boseman and Eartha Kitt.
