According to the Spanish Navy, a ship charged with updating nautical charts to make navigation safer became stranded on Thursday close to the Mediterranean island of Ibiza.
The Malaspina became stranded on one of the shallows as it was exploring a region of them to the west of the island.
The Navy announced in a statement that rescue personnel had been dispatched to assist in removing the warship off the ground.
No injuries were reported and “after an initial inspection… no structural damage can be seen,” said the statement.
The Malaspina, which was constructed in 1975 and renovated in 2007, has traveled more than 180,000 miles while gathering information about the undersea topography of the Spanish coast.
It bears the name Alejandro Malaspina after the famous 18th-century British Royal Navy Brigadier who was in charge of the biggest scientific expedition ever undertaken.
Malaspina can also be translated as “having a bad feeling.”
