In a shocking event, an enormous aquarium inside of a German hotel suddenly burst, creating a ‘tsunami’ of water that caused extensive damage.
The aquarium at the Raddison Blu hotel in Berlin boasted one of the largest cylindrical tanks in the world, at 82-feet high. It held 1,500 tropical fish spanning 80 different species.
It burst around 5:50 am, killing all fish inside.
A staggering one million litres of water filled the hotel lobby in an instant.
Shards of broken window panes and shattered furniture lay scattered about the lobby, and only the frame of the aquarium remained.
Two people suffered cuts from shards of glass and had to be treated at a hospital for their injuries.
Emergency responders from Berlin’s firefighting service wasted no time in mobilizing over 100 workers and rescue dogs to comb through the wreckage in search of anyone who might be trapped.
There was speculation that as temperatures had plummeted overnight, a crack had appeared in the tank. Authorities are still investigating.
