2 million Dimes Stolen From Back of Trailer

Police in Philadelphia are looking for burglars after they allegedly stole $200,000 worth of coins from a tractor-trailer parked in a Walmart parking lot.

On Wednesday, a trucker collected $750,000 worth of dimes from the Philadelphia Mint. He then parked his vehicle in a Walmart parking lot and went home to rest before a long drive to Florida planned for the next day.

The following morning, when he went to fetch the vehicle, he discovered the trailer door open and dimes all over the ground.

“They were trying to cross-load the dimes into other things. There are dimes all over the parking lot,” said Captain Jack Ryan of the Philadelphia Police Department

Whether the driver will be charged is still up in the air, however, Captain Ryan said, “this is common practice — to pick up a load going to Florida and go home for the night, get to sleep, and get on the road in the morning.”

It’s uncertain if the burglars initially knew what was inside the tractor-trailer.

Philadelphia detectives highlighted that it is common for people to break into trailers only to see what is inside.

All different types of items have been stolen in the past, “We’ve had lamb, chicken, TVs, refrigerators, etc… alcohol,” said Ryan

Due to the surveillance cameras in the Walmart parking lot, police have been able to pull together a suspect description.

There were two vehicles, one a white Chrysler 300 and the other a “dark-colored pickup truck,” carrying roughly ten men, according to a New York Times story.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Officer Miguel Torres, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department, told the New York Times.

One big question remains, which officer Torres put it into words. “How do they expect to use it?”
